Konya, Central Anatolia, 60 years old. Within its 202 x 140 cm (6'8" × 4'7"), this kilim tells its story in bands. Birds with outstretched wings at the top, overturned cups at the centre, stars punctuating the whole, each register carries its own figures with a freedom that surprises. Terracotta and khaki green lay the ground, and fuchsia pink and violet erupt in bursts, like high notes in a deep melody.

A kilim that has something to say, and takes its time saying it.
