Three medallions, three characters. Across this warm terracotta ground from Adana, each of the three central diamonds of these 120 x 102 cm (3'11" × 3'4") tells a different story, the first in golden yellows and vivid oranges, the second in a deep brown where white forms seem to float like reflections on water, the third in a soft salmon palette that tempers the whole with an unexpected grace.
Woven by hand some 60 years ago in South-Eastern Anatolia, framed by black borders teeming with multicoloured hexagons that overflow with energy on either side. A piece that never sought to be well-behaved.
