Adana, South-Eastern Anatolia, 60 years old. Within its 255 x 160 cm (8'4" × 5'3"), this kilim reads from top to bottom like a story that changes tone with every chapter. The solar orange of the large upper medallions gives way to the sky blue of the centre, then to the electric fuchsia pink of the bottom, each register more unexpected than the last. The deep bordeaux ground holds everything together with a quiet authority, while the multicoloured borders teem with small motifs that never seem to finish their telling.
