Vintage Adana kilim rug - 265 x 203 cm

Across this Adana kilim, woven some 65 years ago, eight hexagonal medallions align in two columns, each a black diamond lodged at the heart of concentric circles, pink, lavender and saffron, like a precious stone set within its case. The red that carries them breathes here and there, more matte, more deep, that abrash of a wool dyed by hand, never quite the same.

All around, a border bursts with colour, fuchsia pink, violet, orange, cream, like a garden the weaver had let grow freely without ever pruning a single flower. On either side, a black band lets an orange river wind in zigzag, a continuous current that irrigates the entire perimeter and closes the piece like a promise of life. There are kilims one looks at, and then there is this one, that one no longer wants to look away from.
