What strikes you first is the light. That almost golden cream ground radiating beneath the brick red, and those three large diamond-shaped medallions that seem to float at the centre of the 320 x 205 cm (10'6" × 6'9") like three suns laid upon the wool by a weaver from Afyon, 65 years ago.
Around them, the border teems with small star and butterfly motifs, each woven to the millimetre in a palette that stretches from powder pink to sage green without ever losing its way. There is in this kilim a quiet mastery, a way of occupying space without imposing itself, that is the mark of the great pieces of Western Anatolia.
