This Akviran kilim, woven some 65 years ago, unfolds two long almost twin panels, each carrying four stacked medallions that shift in tone at every level, lavender, red, orange, blue-violet, like the four seasons of the same story woven twice side by side. Between the panels and along the edges, tight columns of small hexagons run the full height, each enclosing a different silhouette, that motif of the bond which recalls that nothing, in a kilim as in a life, truly exists alone.
The deep aubergine ground, rare in Anatolian kilims, is never quite uniform, darker here, lighter there, that abrash which betrays a vegetable dye prepared in several baths, by hand, never reproduced identically. It sets the orange and blue-violet singing with an almost electric intensity, while an ochre border frames each panel like a golden frame. Across its 343 x 246 cm (11'3" × 8'1"), this piece commands a rare presence, that of the great kilims woven never to go unnoticed.
One of a kind.
