Vintage Denizli kilim - 267 x 55 cm

Denizli, Western Anatolia, approximately 60 years old. Across 267 x 55 cm (8'9" × 1'10"), bands follow one another in a generous Mediterranean palette, vivid orange, olive green, mustard yellow, blue-grey, vivid pink, punctuated here and there by medallions and small motifs at irregular intervals like resting points along a path.

At the centre, a large black and white star medallion asserts itself in its bordeaux setting, alone and sovereign, surrounded by bands that continue their course on either side without interruption. The weaver sowed variations all the way through, as though she knew that the beauty of a journey lies in what one cannot foresee. A natural wool that six decades have rendered luminous, in a format that transforms a corridor into something one wants to cross slowly.
