A water green descending at the centre like a spring between two banks of pale salmon. Within these 252 x 174 cm (8'3" × 5'9"), colour does not settle, it diffuses, the warm edges bleeding softly towards the cold centre in a fade that only natural wool woven thread by thread can produce.
There is something almost aquatic in this piece, a lightness, a transparency, that stands in sharp contrast to what one usually expects of an Afghan kilim. The weavers of the north-west understood here that restraint can be more powerful than abundance.
