Modern Art Deco kilim – 295 × 195 cm

Some things need no motif to tell a story. Within these 295 x 195 cm (9'8" × 6'5"), blue-grey pulses at the centre like a calm heart, and terracotta orange envelops it on all sides, dense, alive, almost animal. One thinks of lava, of earth cracked open by heat, of those Anatolian landscapes where rock and sky merge at the horizon.

The Afghan weavers captured this in a natural wool spun by hand, without artifice, without excess. Just two colours, a tension between them, and that irregular, living material that nothing industrial will ever know how to imitate.
