Red occupies the centre of these 317 x 203 cm (10'5" × 6'8") with a quiet authority. At its edges, a line of cream and sky-blue sawtooth creates a fault between the red and the powder pink expanses that frame it, as though two worlds were touching without quite merging.
Around it, blocks organise themselves with a modern serenity, pale pink, cream, soft yellow, sky blue, punctual black. White commas descend in rhythm across the central red, like a silent score. The Afghan weavers found here a balance between tension and softness that one would not have thought possible in a single piece of natural wool.
