Bakirdag, Central Anatolia, 65 years old. Within its 160 x 97 cm (5'3" × 3'2"), this kilim holds itself on a contrast few would have dared. The rosy salmon of the field and the deep chocolate brown of the borders and motifs face one another with an assurance that betrays a free hand, accustomed to following instinct rather than convention.

Its large geometric medallions occupy the centre with calm, as though they had always known exactly where they belonged.
