Balikesir, Anatolian Aegean, approximately 55 years old. A large terracotta orange field occupies almost the entire surface of these 148 x 100 cm (4'10" × 3'3"), framed by a blue-grey border from which sawtooth forms bite inward like a wave frozen in the wool.
Nothing else. And that is precisely where the strength of this piece lies. The weaver had the courage of emptiness, of letting this colour exist alone, without motif to justify it. The orange has taken on with time a warm, matte depth that only period vegetable dyes can produce. One lays this kilim down and the room changes temperature.
