Barak, South-Eastern Anatolia, 60 years old. Within its 260 x 150 cm (8'6" × 4'11"), this kilim is bathed in a golden light that few pieces possess. Its large diamonds with sawtooth edges layer over one another in straw yellow, peach and powder pink, with touches of brown running through the whole like light shadows across a sunlit landscape. The vegetable dyes have given these colours an almost watercolour transparency that time has refined still further.
