This kilim from Bodrum, in western Anatolia, was woven some 60 years ago by hands that had known wool since childhood. Within its 105 x 96 cm (3'5" × 3'2"), its red, deep and sovereign, still carries all the warmth of period dyes. The golden flames that rise towards the centre seem animated, as though fire had remained trapped within the weave.
This is a kilim that has no need to explain itself. It imposes.
