At the centre of these 200 x 120 cm (6'7" × 3'11"), a large saffron yellow diamond medallion radiates across a vivid orange ground, guarded on either side by columns of fir tree motifs that descend like a silent forest. Two small black butterflies keep watch at the level of the medallion, barely visible, like witnesses left there by the weaver from Çal.
Woven some 60 years ago in Western Anatolia, this kilim has that generosity of great pieces that give everything without holding back. Midnight blue erupts in bursts through the friezes at top and bottom, blue-grey tempers the orange without ever extinguishing it, and the whole holds together with that instinctive coherence one cannot programme. One lays it down. One never questions it again.
