Cal, in the Büyük Menderes valley in Western Anatolia, has produced kilims of soft palettes and stylised floral motifs, reflecting a zone of contact between nomadic traditions and Aegean influences.
This one chose another path. Woven by hand some 55 years ago, its 200 x 130 cm (6'7" × 4'3") organise themselves around a large black octagonal medallion that presides over a vivid red ground, surrounded by yellow-green motifs that radiate with an intensity that time has not tempered. A surprising freshness of colour for a piece of this age.
