Çal has no equal when it comes to weaving orange. Across 256 x 167 cm (8'5" × 5'6"), three large diamond medallions descend in column on a ground entirely covered with interlocking hooks that repeat, undulate like waves, in a palette running from pale yellow to deep mauve by way of every warm tone imaginable.
What makes this piece hypnotic is this perfectly mastered abundance. Approximately 65 years of natural Anatolian wool, vegetable dyes that have dissolved into one another with time, and that anthracite brown border that holds everything together like a frame holds a canvas. A piece one could look at for hours without exhausting.
