The Cicim technique, particular to Central Anatolia, overlays the base kilim weave with an embroidery that creates motifs in slight relief, visible differently depending on the angle of the light. A patient craft, demanding twice the time of an ordinary kilim.
Woven by hand in natural wool some 65 years ago, this 135 x 120 cm (4'5" × 3'11") kilim unfolds across a deep bordeaux ground a constellation of small embroidered medallions in orange and ochre. A surface one looks at from a distance for its composition, and draws close to in order to feel beneath the fingers what the eye cannot quite grasp.
