Esme, Western Anatolia, 60 years old. Within its 140 x 84 cm (4'7" × 2'9"), this kilim plays on a contrast few dare attempt. The lavender grey ground, almost misty, lets butterfly and star motifs in vivid red and lemon yellow burst forth with an unexpected vitality.

Between the coolness of the ground and the warmth of the motifs, there is a joyful tension that gives this piece its entire character.
