Vintage Esme kilim - 280 x 160 cm

There was a season, in Eşme, when a weaver decided to tell her year panel by panel. This kilim, woven some 65 years ago, carries the trace of that choice, four rectangles that follow one another across 280 x 160 cm (9'2" × 5'3") like the pages of the same notebook, alternating in tone with each turn, coral and pale pink for one, deep brown for the next, like two seasons answering one another without ever quite resembling each other.

All around, a broad coral border winds in chained diamonds, like a river tracing its bed through the composition. And the river calls to water, and water recalls life, that same life the weaver sowed between each panel in the form of small flowers and crosses, coral and sage on an ivory ground, a discreet garden growing along the riverbank.
