Everything is gold in this Gomurgen kilim. A deep honey ground across which stars, crosses and cream and brown diamonds unfold over these 146 x 100 cm (4'9" × 3'3") in a wholly monochromatic harmony, as though the weaver had decided to work only with light and its shadow.
One must draw close to understand the density of what is happening here. Each motif calls forth another, each border contains its own vocabulary, and the whole holds together with that quiet coherence of pieces made without a client in mind, simply for the pleasure of doing well, some 65 years ago, in a village of Central Anatolia whose name says little but whose wool says everything.
