What strikes you first is that great orange arch opening at the top of these 240 x 130 cm (7'10" × 4'3"), like a gateway to something. Beneath it, two diamond medallions descend along the axis of a deep red ground, each different in its palette, grey and saffron yellow for the first, orange and black for the second, connected by small black and golden triangular motifs scattered freely between them.
Kochisar, Central Anatolia, approximately 65 years old. The lateral borders are a collection unto themselves, dozens of small square medallions stacked one upon the other, each in its own colour, red, yellow, mauve, blue-grey, orange, like the pages of an almanac that the weaver had filled day by day. A generous, living piece that never sought discretion.
