This kilim does not seek to seduce gently. It imposes itself. At the centre of these 250 x 154 cm (8'2" × 5'1"), a large concentric diamond medallion occupies the entire space like a sun that has decided to stay, ringed with olive green, burnt orange and cream, set upon a deep bordeaux ground that two blue bands cross like an unexpected horizon.
Köprübaşı, between Central and Western Anatolia, woven some 65 years ago by hands that knew audacity as well as precision. The top and bottom of the piece tell another story, bands of triangular motifs and scattered diamonds that seem to be there to remind us that this rug was alive before it was beautiful.
