Vintage Koprubasi kilim – 270 × 160 cm

A red ground that time has made alive, crossed by natural horizontal striations as though the wool had retained the memory of the loom. Across these 270 x 160 cm (8'10" × 5'3") woven some 70 years ago in Köprübaşı, dozens of small four-pointed stars float freely through the space, each one slightly different from the next in its colour, cream, mauve, saffron yellow, orange, grey-green, as though scattered by hand by someone who refused monotony.

There is in this composition a rare sense of openness. No central medallion crushing everything beneath it, no border closing things in. The lateral borders themselves lean towards that soft grey-mauve that frames the red without ever extinguishing it. Just this deep ground and these drifting stars, in a quiet freedom that belongs only to truly ancient pieces.
