Contemporary Maimana kilim - 146 x 100 cm

Sand, a spring, and time flowing between the two. In this contemporary Maimana kilim, hand-woven in northern Afghanistan, two blue-grey diamonds stack and meet at their centre to draw an hourglass, while on either side turquoise zigzags bite into the apricot field like a spring breaking through the desert.

The apricots, ochres and creams slide into one another without ever stopping cleanly, that abrash which makes the wool breathe and gives each zone its own light. Along the sides and in the border, small stepped forms in grey, turquoise and ochre climb like tiny staircases towards the sky. A kilim that whispers, and whose murmur is enough to eclipse everything else.
