Contemporary Maimana kilim rug - 94 × 60 cm

The Maimana style of the Afghan high plateaus gives this hand-woven kilim two large diamond medallions, vivid orange and deep magenta, that stretch almost from one end to the other against an ivory ground, each crossed by a dense network of triangles and chevrons, like two twin flames that would never quite resemble one another.

A broad red border frames the whole, rhythmed by hourglass motifs in pink, water green, yellow and sky blue, that recall the jewellery worn along the ancient trading routes of Central Asia. A vivid and resolutely contemporary palette, woven by hand with the same exigence as the most ancient pieces.
