There are reds that can no longer be made. The one in this Manisa kilim is among them. A deep, warm terracotta pink, dyed by hand some 60 years ago in a singular vegetable bath, that time has rendered richer still, more complex, like a watercolour that has been slowly drying for six decades.
Within these 190 x 138 cm (6'3" × 4'6"), with no motif and no medallion, it is the wool itself that speaks. Its slight variations in tone, its barely perceptible horizontal striations, its irregular and living material tell more than any kilim overburdened with geometry. Sometimes one must remove everything in order to say everything.
