This Menemenci kilim stacks its bands like so many chapters, woven some 65 years ago. Large ivory diamonds, edged with red and brown hooks, align in a frieze across the full width, framed above and below by finer rows where small diamonds and crosses repeat, in a play of scales that never tires.
At the centre, a denser red band concentrates brown and ochre diamonds, each enclosing a small braided motif that recalls the Cicim technique, that embroidery added thread by thread onto the weave. The deep brown at either end, streaked with light lines, closes the whole and anchors this 105 x 93 cm (3'5" × 3'1") kilim in a rhythmic, almost musical composition.
