Vintage Milas Kilim - 157 x 93 cm

In Milas, on the Aegean lands, the light has a habit of softening everything. This kilim has kept its trace, horizontal bands of ochre, sage, brick and pale blue that stack across its 157 x 93 cm (5'2" × 3'1") like successive horizons, each carrying its small parallel-bar signs, brick red, blue-grey, straw yellow, placed like notes on a staff.

Woven some 60 years ago, it reveals from one band to the next that abrash that only vegetable dyes know how to give, a yellow sliding towards green, a pink fading into peach, like an entire day passing from one thread to the next. Nothing here is hurried, nothing is heavy-handed. A softness that does not impose itself, and that is precisely why one never forgets it.
