On the Black Sea coast, the weavers of Ordu did not have the sun of the Mediterranean. They had thick wool, long winters, and that dense, generous way of filling space that resembles nothing else in Anatolia. Within these 185 x 170 cm (6'1" × 5'7"), almost square, each band tells a different story, hourglasses, hexagons, stars, forms that evoke human silhouettes in motion, woven on a deep brown ground that holds everything together with a quiet authority.
Some 60 years old and of a rare solidity of weave, that of pieces made to outlast those who commissioned them. One almost never finds kilims from Ordu in this condition, in this format, with this density of motifs and this Pontic wool that has crossed time without yielding.
