There are kilims that come from a single loom, and there are those that come from several lives gathered together. This hemp patchwork, born in Anatolia, belongs to that second family, several fragments of ancient weaving, assembled with care, each carrying its own breath, its own black stripes more or less spaced across an almost bare ivory ground. One glimpses here and there a forgotten motif, an ochre star, a fragment of zigzag, vestiges of a design older than the patchwork itself.
Hemp, softer and lighter than wool, gives this piece a raw texture, where every visible seam tells of a repair, a recovery, a gesture of preservation rather than pure creation. Across its 160 x 90 cm (5'3" × 2'11"), this kilim owns a resolutely minimalist aesthetic, almost contemporary, and yet deeply rooted in an ancient practice where nothing was ever discarded.
