There are kilims one looks at, and then there is this one, which one discovers. Woven in Reyhanlı some 75 years ago, it unfolds a vertigo of red medallions where one motif returns, tireless, that silhouette with raised arms joining together like two hands reaching out to hold one another, as though union had always been the force that holds everything upright. Across its 310 x 194 cm (10'2" × 6'4"), the deep red of the ground never falters, punctuated by touches of pink, ochre and lilac that awaken each diamond without ever breaking the rhythm.
What makes this piece truly rare is the almost perfect symmetry between its two sewn panels. Few weavers ever achieved such alignment, motif against motif, without the slightest visible shift, a feat that demanded two looms worked in mirror and an infallible memory of the design. A rarely seen mastery, reserved for the most assured of hands.
