Vintage Sacikara kilim - 143 x 78 cm

Black and white contend for this Saçikara kilim like night and frost. Jagged ivory flames bite into the dark ground on either side, while at the centre, against a deep aubergine field, five pairs of medallions face one another, sky blue, fuchsia pink, vivid orange, mirror after mirror, like five conversations that never end.

Woven some 65 years ago, this 143 x 78 cm (4'8" × 2'7") kilim keeps in its black the colour that weavers associated with protection and mystery, and in its wool white a clarity that has remained intact. Along the dark bands, small pink, white and orange S-shapes scatter, that sign of infinity which neither begins nor ends. A kilim that waits for you to stop before it, and that will not let you leave.
