The Soumak is a technique from the Caucasus where the weft wraps around the warp threads instead of simply passing through them, creating a thick and slightly ribbed surface, somewhere between a kilim and a rug.
Woven by hand in natural wool some 60 years ago, this 152 x 68 cm (4'12" × 2'3") format carries the full density of that craft. Across its deep red ground, large black and golden floral medallions bloom with an elegance that time has refined still further.
