This Soumak has a double life. Before becoming what you see, it was a nomad's bag, sewn, carried, loaded with everything a family transports when it moves its life from one pasture to another. Someone then decided to open it, add weaving to it, and give it a second existence within these 154 x 58 cm (5'1" × 1'11"), which still carry, in every thread, the memory of both.
The Soumak technique wraps the wool in a particular way, thicker, slightly ribbed, almost tactile, and the angular motifs of the Caucasus inscribe themselves within it with that geometric precision that the tribes of the region passed down like an alphabet. Deep red, midnight blue, burnt orange, fuchsia pink erupting in bursts like a secret kept within the weave.
