Vintage Soumak kilim rug - 185 x 59 cm

There are pieces that have never known a floor. This one was a nomad's bag, sewn in Persia to travel from one encampment to the next through the seasons, its two broad bands of raw honey-coloured wool still marked by a few signs traced freehand, an animal with graceful legs at the top, a seated silhouette near its tent at the very bottom, like two snapshots sketched between two stages of the road.

Between them, a long dark red body unfolds across 185 x 59 cm (6'1" × 1'11"), where two motifs alternate in a staggered pattern, small starred crosses and elongated diamonds with scalloped outlines, the Soumak technique wrapping each thread rather than weaving it, for a dense and textured relief, almost embroidered. A piece that carried far more than wool.
