Vintage Soumak kilim rug - 215 x 70 cm

This nomad's bag crossed Persia through the seasons of transhumance, carried from one encampment to the next long before it knew the calm of an interior. Two broad mauve pink bands frame it, edged with deep black like two firm borders, before the eye plunges into the dark red body of the bag itself, cross-hatched with small repeated medallions in tight rows, each edged with a fine cream hook.

The Soumak technique, which wraps each thread rather than weaving it, gives these 215 x 70 cm (7'1" × 2'4") a dense, almost embroidered relief that one wants to touch before even looking at it. A piece that still holds, in its weave, the rhythm of a road long since forgotten.
