Modern Waziri kilim - 142 x 100 cm

The high plateaus of Afghanistan gave birth to the Waziri style, and this hand-woven kilim carries all of its vigour. Against a deep red ground, a large network of diamonds chains together from top to bottom, each cross-hatched with ochre and sand, punctuated at its heart by small medallions in sky blue, coral and water green that seem to float like pearls laid upon the weave.

A broad cream border frames this vibrant composition, animated by crosses and hourglass motifs in red, pale blue and orange, that recall the traditional jewellery worn along the trading routes of Central Asia. A contemporary hand-woven piece, that carries the same exigence of gesture as the most ancient kilims.
