The Waziri style carries the vitality of the Afghan highlands, and this hand-woven kilim is a fine example. Against a brilliant turquoise ground, a large wolf-tooth medallion unfolds from top to bottom, edged with vivid orange and raspberry, with at its heart two small diamonds set like jewels, one pink and gold, the other coral and sand.

Around this vibrant field, a broad grey border comes alive with crosses and hourglass motifs in pink, orange and bordeaux, that rhythm the entire perimeter with a contemporary energy. Across its 162 x 103 cm (5'4" × 3'5"), this kilim owns a resolutely vivid palette, far from the patina of ancient pieces, but with the same exigence of the hand-woven gesture.
