At the heart of this Afyon kilim, woven some 65 years ago in western Anatolia, a blue-grey diamond opens like a case upon a red diamond, itself closed around an ochre and brown heart. Three interlocking forms, each born of the other, that draw the entire eye across these 138 x 95 cm (4'6" × 3'1").
The red of the field is never quite the same from one end to the other, these subtle variations in tone, the abrash, betray a vegetable dye prepared in small quantities, bath by bath, by hand. Around the central medallion, small ornamental motifs punctuate the space with discretion, while a dense border of grey, ochre and red diamonds closes the whole like a frame tied with care.
