Çal, Western Anatolia, approximately 60 years old. At the centre of these 300 x 170 cm (9'10" × 5'7"), a large diamond medallion asserts itself like something inevitable. Ringed with olive green, blue-grey and deep black, it burns against the red like a flame someone had managed to weave.
All around, the borders tell another story. More agitated, more free, overflowing with motifs in orange, white and black that seem to want to escape the frame. The centre holds everything. The edges tremble. It is this tension between mastery and freedom that makes this piece impossible to forget.
