At the centre of these 150 x 110 cm (4'11" × 3'7"), four dark panels carry mirrored arabesques in white cotton, forms that coil back upon themselves like a forgotten alphabet that only the weavers of Esme still knew how to read some 60 years ago. The cotton retains that particular luminosity that wool cannot give, bright and sharp, bringing out each curve with an almost graphic precision.
Around them, a brown bordeaux holds everything in place, edged with sage green, blue-grey and saffron yellow that arrange themselves in concentric crowns towards the edges, as though the piece were intent on keeping something precious at its heart and refusing to let it escape.
