Kozak, Western Anatolia, approximately 65 years old. What strikes you first in these 115 x 74 cm (3'9" × 2'5") is that unexpected turquoise blue that runs through the composition like a breath of cool air, woven in a checkerboard with white on a vivid red ground to create forms that resemble guardians, symmetrical, arms open, as though welcoming something sacred.
The technique is of a remarkable fineness. Each square of the checkerboard is tiny, woven by hand with a precision that gives the surface an almost vibrant texture. A piece one looks at from a distance for the composition, and up close to admire it.
