At the centre of these 168 x 126 cm (5'6" × 4'2"), a large black diamond medallion asserts itself on a patinated old rose ground, carrying at its heart a square of pure gold that burns like a kept flame. Around it, dozens of small saffron yellow diamonds float freely through the space like so many satellites orbiting their star.
Maras, South-Eastern Anatolia, some 65 years old. There is in this piece that particular density of tribal kilims that had no model to follow, just a collective memory and hands that knew how to make it speak. Each motif here has a name, a meaning, a place that owes nothing to chance, and some of them still hold a mystery waiting to be deciphered.
