The orange of Menemenci is a colour that imposes itself before one has even had time to look at the details. Within these 110 x 95 cm (3'7" × 3'1"), it radiates like a bed of embers on which each band tells a different story, golden scrollwork, blue-grey medallions, diamond forms floating in zones of abrash where colours dissolve and separate like ink in water.
This is the particular richness of Menemenci, this way of layering languages, horizontal bands, mirrored motifs, fragments of geometry, without anything contradicting anything else. Woven by hand some 60 years ago in a wool that time has rendered luminous, this small format concentrates within its 110 x 95 cm everything that a large kilim takes metres to say.
